I don’t have the answer to that question. However, a recent Cossette study hopes to answer that very question. My friend Ian over at Cossette tweeted the case study around dinner time last night and people have been spreading the information since then. I’m still digging into the case study and hope to do a real post for Friday. However, I want to make everyone aware of the case study and point out some interesting facts:
- Canadians, and especially Quebecers, are more likely to choose face to face contacts (26%) whereas Americans still like the telephone (30%).
- In Canada, Facebook is the most popular social network with a subscription rate of 66% among Internet users, a rate that is above the American average of 51%. But even in the US, Facebook ranks first before My Space at 36%.
- It is no surprise then to find that 75% of young people claim to visit Facebook on average 16 times a week or, if one prefers, more than twice a day.
- It should be noted that “Gen Y” is more likely to publish their opinion of businesses or products, which reinforces the notion that they use brands to serve their social status, both online and offline. This trend was found in 48% of cases in both Canada and the United States, indicating there is no “sharing” gap between the two countries when it comes to young adults.
That’s just a very small sample of what is in this entire case study from Cossette. Dig around and see what you find useful. This is one of the first case studies to look at social media from the point of view of 3 different countries. There are many similarities but they are difference and those differences are key for any company working on a global or international bases. As someone looking to launch a new site next year, I know this is going to aid me in the endevour.

Thanks for sharing the study Duane. Hope you find it useful as you dig a little deeper into the content.
No problem at all Ian. It was a great read and I hope you guys do it each year.
That’s the goal – we want to see year-over-year benchmark comparisons.
Awesome to hear Ian. Can’t wait to check it out next year. People are loving it. Just got a Retweet the other day from a person in Hong Kong. Had no idea people were following me out there.
