I’m not connecting Twitter with my LinkedIn account
A few days ago the LinkedIn blog announced LinkedIn works with Twitter, and vice versa. And I’ve to say I don’t care for a few reasons:
1. Different services serve different audiences and purposes.
You can check out this post Facebook’s @Reply is Not a Twitter Killer, which compares two very different services. It’s the same for LinkedIn and Twitter. No one uses Twitter in the same way they use LinkedIn.
2. This is a search play for LinkedIn
I don’t know anyone who is on LinkedIn everyday, let alone multiple times in one day or in a week. There are a dozen people I’m connected with on LinkedIn who have updated their accounts through Twitter. Now what are the odds they’ll update their status again in the next 12 or 24 hours. Pretty good I would think. Now if they update their account once every 24 hours… what are the odds their connections are going to see each status update? Not very likely as few people are on LinkedIn everyday. This announcement only really services Twitter and to a greater degree LinkedIn. LinkedIn can now get more status updates and thus have search engines crawling the site a lot more often. Before this announcement was made on Monday, very few people updated their status on any regular bases. They even mention the search benefit in their blog post.
Conclusion
Sorry LinkedIn, but until you prove that there is value from me updating my status from my twitter account, I won’t be doing it. This announcement sounded great like the Twitter and Facebook one back in the summer. However, very few people are still using it in my Facebook stream to this very day. I only see the same fate coming to your service.
