Marketers Are Leaving Second Life

The LA Times has an interesting article, Virtual marketers have second thoughts about Second Life, about how corporations are leaving Second Life because they can’t seem to attract and sustain people to their virtual entities.

Consulting firms that were set up to bring brands into Second Life are busy helping clients explore other worlds.

One such agency, Millions of Us, recently announced that it had formed a partnership with Gaia Online, a site popular with teenagers, and CEO Reuben Steiger said it would be unveiling more soon. Millions of Us had previously worked only with Second Life.

“It’s not about whether Second Life is good or bad,” Steiger said. “It’s just that there are a lot of alternatives.”

The fact there are alternatives is what is killing Second Life. Other online worlds have a purpose and when you are Second Life and you don’t have a purpose it’s hard to keep people around. If Second Life were to die off we would see a new phoenix rise from the ashes of the old one, better and strong then before, because Second Life is just the begining.

No real surprise here! The good news is this shows the maturing of social media in corporations.

    Hey Dave

How does it show the maturing of social media?

Weather you are on Facebook or Second Life, you need to treat what you are doing within that online world like a garden. You can’t just show up, drop everything in place and then leave for good, which is what I feel a lot of these companies are doing. There needs to be somewhat of a long term plan or idea in place if you are going to succeed. You need to work on the garden 3 or 4 times a week, if you are going to see a ROI on your investment.

I’ve come back to this one metaphor & to succeed on Facebook with your social media goals, you’ve to treat your project like a garden. BTW, I think this goes for online worlds like Second Life as well, especial after the recent article in the LA Times this past weekend. [...]
